Where the glaze thins at its edges, a flush of orange red appears, the fire colour prized in shino ware. The upper wall and rim stay bare, matte and softly grained, circled by fine throwing rings, a quiet record of the hand that shaped it. The clay is rich in iron, the same earth that has anchored Japanese pottery in Echizen for some 850 years, among the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan. A generous opening takes ice with ease, for shochu, whiskey or iced coffee. Shaped on the wheel, each one reads slightly differently from the next.
