Shono White Rain, the 46th print in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, depicts a sudden summer downpour catching travelers on a hillside road — palanquin bearers struggling upward, a farmer descending against them, bamboo pressed sideways by the wind. The scene is largely imaginary. What it captures is the sensation of being caught in rain: diagonal lines of varying weight and density pressed into the composition with a technical precision that remained demanding to carve and print. Hiroshige made the journey along the Tokaido in 1832, and the series produced from it — published by Hoeido between 1833 and 1834 — established the landscape print as the dominant ukiyo-e subject of the era. This reproduction is produced by Takahashi Kobo, founded in Bunkyo, Tokyo between 1854 and 1860, the oldest ukiyo-e woodblock studio in continuous operation in Japan, now in its sixth generation.
