RYUMONJI-YAKI POTTERY

In Aira City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Ryumonji ware has been shaped from locally gathered clay since 1688, fired in an ascending kiln at temperatures reaching 1,250 degrees Celsius using glazes refined entirely on site from materials collected within 3 kilometers of the kiln. Managed by the Ryumonji Ware Pottery Union, this is one of the few traditions in Japan where potters control every stage from raw material to finished vessel.
