Bizen Ware Urushi-kake Kushime Tumbler

Sale price$79.00

Fine comb marks, the kushime of the name, run around the lower wall, where pale blue grey glaze has settled into the clay in drifting, uneven patches. Above, the body darkens through iron brown toward the rim, where a band of urushi lacquer closes the form in black. Hikari Kiln points to the smooth feel this lacquer gives the lip. The earth beneath is Echizen clay, rich in iron, the ground on which Echizen ware has stood for some 850 years among Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. Its warmth shows in every unglazed passage, quiet and grained. The wide mouth takes ice with ease, suited to shochu and just as well to iced coffee. Each cup is presented in its own box.

A handleless ceramic tumbler featuring a dark brown ribbed upper section and a heavily textured, speckled grey and brown glaze on the lower half, set against a white background.

Hikari Kiln

Brand History

Hikari Kiln stands in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, in the heart of Echizen ware country, where potters have worked for 850 years. The vessels presented here are the work of Mitsuo Tsukasatsuji, born in 1947 in what was once the village of Miyazaki. Tsukasatsuji walks two paths at once: the artist who creates for Nitten, Japan’s foremost art exhibition, and the craftsman who makes vessels for daily use. His artistry has earned him a place as Nitten judge on four occasions, recognition as a Contemporary Master Craftsman, and, in 2018, a national decoration for devotion to his craft. His guiding words are simple: honor tradition, and make vessels for modern life. In every piece, the depth of Echizen clay meets the ease of the everyday table, so that the heights of fine art and the comfort of daily use are never separate things. Hikari Kiln continues to look ahead, exploring new forms of Echizen ware and craft that gently reach beyond tradition.
