Takasaki Daruma: A Symbol of Perseverance and Good Fortune

The Daruma doll, an enduring emblem of perseverance and luck in Japan, originates from Takasaki in Gunma Prefecture. Representing Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, its round, limbless design reflects the legend of his nine-year meditation.

In the mid-18th century, a Shorinzan Daruma Temple priest introduced Daruma crafting to support struggling farmers. The dolls soon became a symbol of resilience, their weighted base allowing them to return upright when tilted—embodying the proverb "Nanakorobi Yaoki" (seven times down, eight times up).

Takasaki Daruma are traditionally red, associated with warding off evil, and feature blank eyes for goal-setting. One eye is filled in upon setting an intention, and the second upon achievement, reinforcing perseverance.

Each year, thousands visit the Shorinzan Daruma Market Festival to purchase new Daruma and ceremonially return old ones. With Takasaki producing 80% of Japan’s Daruma, the tradition remains a vital cultural heritage.
