Kakuri has produced Japanese woodworking tools in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture since 1946, a metalworking region with roots in the Edo period. This 6-piece carving chisel set is built around high-speed steel blades, a material chosen for its hardness and edge retention across both softwoods and hardwoods, and suited to the sustained, detailed work that instrument making and fine carving demand. The set covers the essential range of carving profiles: 2 flat chisels at 12mm and 24mm for flat surface finishing, 2 U gouges at 15mm and 24mm for shallow concave roughing, a shallow U gouge at 18mm for refining roughed surfaces, and a short bent U gouge at 18mm for hollowing deeper concave areas. Handles are smoked oak, shaped to a gourd form that sits in the palm rather than the fingers, giving direct transfer of force through the cut. The set is stored in a canvas roll case.
