The Artistry of Mizusawa Cast Iron and Nambu Tekki

Nestled in the serene landscapes of Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, the Mizusawa region is the heart of a timeless craft - Nambu Tekki (Nambu Cast Iron). This storied tradition of cast iron production, tracing its roots back to the late Heian period around 1088, has been a testament to the region's cultural and artistic heritage. Influenced by the flourishing culture of the Hiraizumi era, Nambu Tekki ironware, including elegant iron kettles, robust iron pots, and melodious wind chimes, stands as a symbol of durability, beauty, and everyday utility.

Creating Nambu Tekki is an intricate dance of craftsmanship and artistry. Skilled artisans pour molten iron into intricately designed molds, shaping each piece with precision and care. Every item, from the initial pour to the final polish, reflects the core values of Japanese craftsmanship: quality, precision, and aesthetic harmony. The distinct climate and natural resources of Mizusawa infuse each piece with unparalleled quality, making these iron products cherished treasures both in Japan and around the world.

Brand History

In November 1954, a group of passionate artisans came together to form the Mizusawa Foundry Industry Cooperative Association, dedicated to preserving and enriching the Nambu Tekki tradition. This cooperative became the lifeblood of small and medium-sized foundry businesses, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.

By pooling resources for joint product sales, bulk purchasing, and shared facilities, the association empowered its members to thrive in a competitive market. But beyond business support, the heart of the cooperative lay in nurturing artisans. Through comprehensive education and training programs, they ensured that future generations would master the intricate techniques of Nambu Tekki, safeguarding its cultural heritage.

One of the highlights of their efforts is the Oshu Nambu Tekki Festival, an annual celebration where local artisans showcase their exquisite work. This event not only promotes Nambu Tekki to a wider audience but also deepens appreciation for this unique craft.

Through unwavering commitment to quality, education, and community engagement, the Mizusawa Foundry Industry Cooperative Association keeps the Nambu Tekki tradition vibrant and relevant, ensuring it continues to enchant the world.
