ORYOKI Buddha Bowl Set Black

Oryoki is the personal eating vessel of Zen Buddhist monks — a nested set of bowls used in formal monastic meals, each size carrying a prescribed purpose, the whole assembly fitting together into a single unit when stored. GATOMIKIO brings that principle into a lacquerware context rooted in Yamanaka, Ishikawa Prefecture, where the studio has worked since 1908, building on a tradition of lathe-turned lacquerware that developed as a distinct expression within the broader Kanazawa craft region. Where Wajima ware builds depth through repeated lacquer application, Yamanaka lacquerware is defined by the precision of its lathe work — wood turned thin enough to reveal its grain through the finish, the form made to stand on its own before lacquer is applied. This 6-piece set is turned from zelkova, a hardwood with a pronounced, regular grain that reads through the black wiped lacquer finish as surface movement rather than decoration. The bowls nest completely into the largest piece for storage. Small bowls for pickles and condiments, medium for side dishes, large for the main course.
