Hasami ware: Everyday porcelain shaped by utility and refinement

Hasami ware originates from Nagasaki Prefecture and has been produced for over 400 years. Developed in the Hasami area near Arita, this porcelain style flourished during the Edo period as a center for practical, everyday ceramics. Unlike the ornate and export-focused works of neighboring kilns, Hasami ware evolved to meet domestic demand—tableware that was durable, well-proportioned, and beautifully understated.

One of its defining features is the balance between elegance and function. Often made with a blend of porcelain and stoneware clay, Hasami ware combines the delicate translucence of porcelain with a grounded, tactile feel. Blue-and-white hand painting using gosu pigment remains a signature aesthetic, but Hasami artisans also embrace modern silhouettes and neutral glazes that harmonize with contemporary dining. Still crafted today in small family kilns, Hasami ware reflects the quiet sophistication of everyday life in Japan—crafted not to impress, but to serve and endure.

Brand History

Founded in 1987 by ceramic artist Kazumitsu Ezoe, Kouringama is a Hasami ware kiln rooted in the quiet hills of Nagasaki. Drawing on years of training in Kyo ware and Seto ware, Ezoe established his own path—one defined by pure white porcelain and intricate cobalt brushwork. Every motif is painted by hand, without stamps or transfers, and even the kiln’s signature is handwritten beneath each piece.

Kouringama's porcelain speaks in subtle tones: transparent whites, deep blues, and delicate forms that echo Japan’s shifting seasons. From cherry blossoms in spring to maple leaves in autumn, the kiln’s pieces reflect the moods of nature and the rhythms of the table.
